Expert Metal Stair Builders and Installers for Apartments in San Jose, CA

In San Jose’s fast-moving rental market, apartments handle a steady stream of daily foot traffic. Stairs may be used hundreds of times a day, which means they must withstand years of heavy use while staying compliant with building codes. That’s where experienced fabrication makes a difference.

Whether you need custom multi-flight stairs with steel landings for a garden-style apartment or switchback stairs for a walk-up building, our team fabricates systems that match your needs in a way that pre-fab kits can’t. We use steel for our exterior apartment stairs and emergency egress systems, ensuring proper support for high occupant loads and easy maintenance.

Common Layouts and Construction Types of San Jose Stairs

Expert fabricators of steel stairs don’t just pick a style and start the work. We analyze building type and layout, occupancy rates, traffic, safety codes, and climate exposure before choosing both the stair layout and construction type. Working with property owners and contractors in San Jose and beyond, we have experience on the following configurations:

Straight-Run Exterior Stairs

This is the simplest and most recognizable layout for apartment staircases. You’ll find this configuration in sprawling apartment complexes in San Jose and in two-story buildings where a single stair can easily connect the ground level and upper floor. From a construction standpoint, straight-run stairs are a practical option to fabricate because they’re quick to produce and install. Sometimes the majority of the work can be done in the shop and then the stairs are assembled and bolted into place on site.

L-Shaped Stairs

When a building doesn’t have enough space for straight stairs, that’s where L-shaped staircases come in. We split the climb into two shorter sections, so the metal stairs fit into a smaller footprint. The L-shaped layout is ideal for building corners because they turn in the same direction as the building’s walkways, making movement feel intuitive.

Switchback Stairs

This design is often used in three- and four-story apartment buildings, where multiple floors need to connect to a single stair tower. We use steel or concrete landings as a frame, which are then attached to the stair stringers and building supports. These landings transfer the weight of the stairs and people to the building’s structure, and we may use concrete-filled pans as the landing material for heavy-duty performance.

Owners of apartments, condos and other multi-family units also call on us when they’re looking for a specific type of stair tread system.

Our team is experienced in building pan stairs, wherein a metal pan is filled with concrete and then used as the tread (step) of the stairs. Each step feels solid, and the stair itself is designed to last for decades. Another option: concrete tread stairs, which can be made with precast concrete and attached directly to the stair stringers.

Commercial Stairs Designed to Meet Local Code Requirements

To prevent falls and offer support, we also install apartment stair railings and continuous handrails. These are designed to meet California Building Code’s height, spacing, and strength requirements.

Our stairs for apartment complexes are considered not just a metalwork project, but a life-safety component. We ensure that stairs meet strict requirements for load capacity, landing dimensions, headroom clearance, and even fire safety.

Exterior stairs for apartment complexes are subject to periodic inspections as per California law, and we help owners comply by using corrosion-resistant coatings and concrete treads with drainage slope. This results in a stair system that remains safe for repeated inspection cycles.

Add-Ons You Actually Need Before a Stair Installation

Reliable fabricators often recommend these upgrades to further improve the safety of stairs for multi-family units. Depending on your specific use and needs, we can discuss the best options for your project to help steer you towards some recommended options, such as:

  • Anti-Slip Tread Plates - Tread surfaces can be customized by using diamond plate steel, serrated metal treads, or bar grating. This add-on is especially useful for exterior stairs exposed to rain.
  • Corrosion Protection - Your options may include hot-dip galvanizing that protects the corners and hollow sections of the stairs, and powder coating that prevents moisture from reaching the steel. An industrial-grade paint can also be applied to prevent rust.
  • Mounting Brackets for Lights - Lighting fixtures help illuminate treads and risers, as well as landings between flights. This helps increase visibility and safety for residents, especially when exterior stairs are used at night.

Need Stair Replacement or Repairs? Here’s How We Can Help

Even a well-built staircase can wear down due to heavy use or weather exposure. When that happens, metal stair repairs or full replacement may be necessary, and our team can handle both and recommend practical solutions. We repair stairs with treads that have lost slip resistance, damaged metal railings, and loose anchor points.

A full replacement may be the most cost-effective solution when the stair layout needs to be redesigned for safety or when the landings or framings have become unstable or won’t be able to pass a safety inspection.
